What to Do Before and After a NAS Power Outage
Is NAS Vulnerable to a Power Cut?
Sudden power loss can interrupt active writes and trigger filesystem or storage-pool checks, but it does not mean that every file or drive has been damaged.
Do not do these things after an outage: Do not boot the NAS without its drives, change their bay order, recreate the storage pool, repeatedly force-restart the system, or run unfamiliar SSH commands. These actions can turn a recoverable problem into permanent data loss.

What Should You Do First After a NAS Power Outage?
The correct first action depends on whether the outage is planned, still in progress, or already over.

If the NAS remains inaccessible or reports multiple missing drives, stop before making storage changes. Preserve the drive order and current system state so the underlying fault can be diagnosed.
How to Shut Down a UGREEN NAS Before a Planned Outage
When severe weather, electrical work, or a scheduled building outage gives you advance warning, shut down the NAS before power is interrupted.
- Finish or pause active file transfers.
- Stop scheduled backups, synchronization jobs, downloads, virtual machines, and containers when time allows.
- If data scrubbing, RAID synchronization, or a rebuild is running, allow it to finish whenever possible. If the outage is imminent, use a controlled shutdown instead of abruptly removing power.
- Sign in to UGOS Pro, select the power icon in the upper-right corner, and choose Shut Down.
- Wait until the shutdown finishes and the power indicator turns off before disconnecting power.

Avoid holding the physical power button to force the NAS off unless the system is completely unresponsive. A forced power-off creates the same interrupted-write risks as an unexpected outage.
Before an emergency occurs, record which drive serial number belongs in each bay. Label the drive trays by bay number so the original order can be preserved if several drives are ever removed for service.
How to Check a UGREEN NAS After Power Returns
Do not immediately resume every application and backup job. First confirm that the power supply and the NAS are stable.
1. Check the electrical environment
Make sure the outage has ended and that the power is no longer flickering. Check the wall outlet, power strip, power adapter, UPS, and cables for unusual heat, odor, discoloration, or visible damage.
Do not reconnect equipment that shows signs of an electrical fault.
2. Boot the NAS once
Start the NAS and give it time to complete its normal checks. An unclean shutdown can make the first boot take longer than usual, especially when the system needs to examine a large storage pool.
Avoid restarting the NAS simply because the interface does not appear immediately.
3. Review the system logs
Open Log Center and look for events around the time of the outage, including:
- Abnormal or unexpected shutdown
- Storage-pool warnings
- Drive disconnection or I/O errors
- Failed backup or synchronization tasks
- Container, database, or virtual-machine failures
- UPS connection or battery events
The time of the first error can help distinguish an outage-related interruption from a drive problem that started earlier.

4. Inspect the storage pool and drives
Open Storage Manager and check:
- Storage-pool status
- RAID status
- Missing or disconnected drives
- SMART warnings
- Synchronization, repair, or consistency-check activity
- Available storage capacity
If UGOS Pro starts a supported consistency check or RAID operation automatically, do not interrupt it. Reduce other storage-intensive workloads until the process finishes.
A degraded pool does not mean that you should start a rebuild immediately. First identify the affected drive, check the health of the remaining members, and confirm that important data is backed up. If a rebuild has failed or stopped unexpectedly, follow the RAID rebuild troubleshooting process before replacing or reinitializing anything.
5. Check the data that was active during the outage
Existing files that were not being modified are less likely to be affected than files that were open or actively changing.
Check:
- Files being copied to or from the NAS
- Documents being saved
- Active computer or phone backups
- Surveillance recordings
- Download tasks
- Databases
- Virtual-machine disks
- Container application data
Open several affected files rather than relying only on filenames or folder sizes. A transfer can leave a file that appears complete but cannot be opened correctly.
6. Confirm that your backup is available
Before attempting repairs, confirm that an independent backup exists and that important files can be opened from it.
If the backup destination synchronizes changes from the NAS, check whether the outage or subsequent application errors affected that copy. Pause synchronization or scheduled backup jobs if continuing them could overwrite a healthy version.
What Can Sudden Power Loss Damage?
The outcome depends on what the NAS was doing when power failed.

Hard drives include emergency mechanisms that help move their heads away from the data surface when power disappears. The main storage risks are interrupted writes, incomplete metadata updates, repeated power cycling, and unstable electrical conditions. An outage does not automatically create bad sectors or destroy the entire storage pool.
A blackout, brownout, and surge are different events:
- A blackout is a complete loss of power.
- A brownout is a drop in voltage that can cause instability without fully turning equipment off.
- A surge is a brief rise in voltage that can damage electronics.
A surge protector can reduce some voltage-related risks, but it cannot keep the NAS running or tell it to shut down.
How Does a UPS Protect a NAS?
A UPS provides temporary power while the NAS completes a controlled shutdown. The protection depends on two parts working together:
- The UPS battery keeps the NAS powered after utility power fails.
- A USB or network connection tells UGOS Pro that the system is running on battery.
UGOS Pro can then begin its configured shutdown process before the battery is exhausted.
A NAS connected only to the UPS power output may still shut down abruptly when the battery runs out. Without a supported communication connection, the NAS may not know that utility power has failed.
For most home NAS setups, configure enough battery time to provide at least a 5–10-minute controlled-shutdown window. Shutdown time varies with running applications, active storage operations, and the installed drives, so the NAS should begin shutting down well before the UPS reaches its low-battery threshold.
A UPS should therefore be selected for:
- Sufficient output for the NAS and installed drives
- Supported USB or network communication
- At least 5–10 minutes for controlled shutdown
- Compatible shutdown behavior in UGOS Pro
The objective is not to keep the NAS running throughout a long outage. The objective is to give active writes time to finish and allow the operating system, applications, and storage pool to close cleanly.

Should the NAS restart automatically when power returns?
Automatic restart is useful only when the incoming power is stable. If electricity repeatedly returns and fails again, immediate restart can place the NAS in a cycle of interrupted startups and shutdowns.
Test the complete UPS sequence before relying on it:
- Confirm that UGOS Pro detects the UPS.
- Stop active transfers and storage operations.
- Disconnect utility power from the UPS without disconnecting the NAS.
- Confirm that UGOS Pro reports battery operation.
- Allow the configured shutdown to complete.
- Restore utility power and confirm the expected restart behavior.
- Review the system log for shutdown and UPS events.
Do not perform this test during a RAID rebuild, data scrub, major transfer, or other storage-intensive operation.
Repeat the test every 6–12 months. Battery capacity declines with age, heat, and discharge cycles. If available runtime drops substantially, the UPS fails its self-test, or it no longer completes a controlled shutdown, service or replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Why a UPS Still Is Not a Backup
A UPS reduces the risk of an unclean shutdown. It cannot recover files lost to accidental deletion, ransomware, drive failure, theft, fire, or application corruption.
RAID can keep a storage pool available after a supported number of drive failures, but RAID is not an independent backup. Important data still needs another copy stored on separate media or in a separate location.

After an outage, resume applications, transfers, and scheduled jobs gradually. If multiple drives remain missing, I/O errors continue, the NAS repeatedly shuts down, or you find signs of electrical damage, stop troubleshooting instead of attempting one more restart.
