How to Back Up iPhone Photos to UGREEN NAS
The UGREEN NAS mobile app can automatically copy photos and videos from your iPhone to your UGREEN NAS. Once configured, it can back up new media in the background, including Live Photos and selected albums.
Photo Backup covers the media in your iPhone’s Photos library. It does not create a complete, restorable iPhone backup containing settings, app data, Home Screen layout, messages, or passwords.

Before deleting photos from your iPhone or reducing your iCloud storage plan, open the NAS copies and confirm that the original files are usable. Irreplaceable photos should also have a second independent backup.
What Does UGREEN NAS Back Up From an iPhone?
The current UGREEN NAS app for iOS supports:
- Automatic backup of newly added photos and videos
- Selection of specific iPhone albums
- Background backup
- Nighttime idle backup
- Live Photos
- Wi-Fi-only transfers
The app reads the media available through the iPhone Photos library. Granting access to only selected photos limits the backup to those items. Choose full photo-library access if you want new photos and videos to be included automatically.
UGREEN NAS preserves the media format provided by the iPhone. HEIC photos remain HEIC, and HEVC video is not automatically converted to H.264. HEVC describes the video codec; the file itself commonly uses a .MOV container. RAW, JPEG, and other supported media formats are also stored without automatic re-encoding by UGOS Pro.
Photo Backup does not include applications, messages, device settings, passwords, or the complete iPhone operating environment. It is also separate from a direct iCloud Photos import. The UGREEN NAS app backs up media available through the iPhone’s Photos library; it does not sign in to iCloud Photos and independently download the entire cloud library.
If several family members are backing up their phones, give each person a separate UGREEN NAS account and destination folder. Whether the iPhone holds the full original file depends heavily on the iCloud Photos setting.
Check iCloud Photos Before Starting
With iCloud Photos enabled, Apple can keep full-resolution originals in iCloud while storing smaller, space-saving versions on the iPhone. The setting you use determines whether the original files are ready for the UGREEN NAS app to copy.

To check the setting, open:
Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos
If Optimize iPhone Storage is selected, choose Download and Keep Originals. Connect the iPhone to power and Wi-Fi, and make sure it has enough free storage to download the library. Apple explains how optimized storage and full-resolution originals work in its iCloud Photos documentation.
When the entire library cannot fit on the iPhone, download the originals through a Mac or Windows computer and transfer them to the NAS from there.
iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive are separate services. iCloud Photos manages the Apple photo library, while iCloud Drive stores general files and folders. The UGREEN mobile photo-backup workflow uses the iPhone Photos library, not iCloud Drive.

How Much NAS Storage Do Your iPhone Photos Need?
Start with the size of the complete library:
- Check how much storage Photos uses on the iPhone.
- If Optimize iPhone Storage is enabled, check the complete Photos usage in iCloud because the local figure may exclude full-resolution originals.
- Estimate how much the library grew during the previous 12 months.
- Add three to five years of expected growth.
- Keep approximately 20% of the NAS volume free for normal operation and unexpected growth.
For example, a 200GB library growing by 75GB per year reaches 575GB after five years. Leaving 20% free means planning for at least 720GB of usable NAS capacity.
Video settings can change that estimate quickly. Apple reports that one minute of 4K/30 HEVC recording can use more than 175MB, while one minute of 4K/30 ProRes 422 HQ can exceed 6.6GB. The exact rate depends on the codec, frame rate, resolution, HDR setting, and iPhone model. Apple’s video-format guide lists current examples.
Use usable NAS capacity in the calculation, not the combined capacity printed on the drives. Two 4TB drives in RAID 1 provide 4TB of decimal usable capacity before system and filesystem overhead, not 8TB.
With the storage prepared and the original files available on the iPhone, the app setup is straightforward.
How to Back Up iPhone Photos and Videos to UGREEN NAS
- Prepare the NAS storage. Install compatible drives, create a storage pool and volume, and confirm that the usable capacity covers the current library and expected growth. If several people use the NAS, create an individual account and backup folder for each person.
- Install or update the UGREEN NAS app. Download the current iOS version from the official UGREEN NAS app page. Updating first helps prevent problems already corrected in newer releases.
- Connect the app to the NAS. For the initial connection, place the iPhone and NAS on the same local network. Open the app, find the NAS, and sign in with the account that should own the photo backup.
- Grant the required iPhone permissions. Allow the app to access the local network and choose full access to Photos. Selected-photo access is appropriate only when you deliberately want to back up a limited set of images.
- Open the photo-backup control. In the app, open Sync & Backup, select Album Backup, and enable automatic backup.
- Choose what and where to back up. Select the albums or media categories you want to copy, then choose the destination folder on the NAS. Set the destination organization rule before the first large upload. Files can be grouped into folders by capture year and month or stored together in one destination folder.
- Choose the network and background settings. Turn on Wi-Fi-only backup if you do not want the task to use cellular data. Enable background and nighttime idle backup for newly added media.
- Let the initial upload finish on a stable connection. A large photo library may require hours or days. Keep the iPhone connected to power and reliable Wi-Fi. For the first large batch, open the app periodically and confirm that the completed-file count continues to increase.
- Review the task status. Check the backup task for paused, skipped, or failed items. A completed task with no reported error is the first verification step, not final proof that every file is safe.
- Open the files from the NAS. View several photos and play several videos from beginning to end. Include older media, recent files, HEIC photos, a Live Photo, and at least one large video in the test.
Verify the NAS Copy Before Freeing iPhone Storage
Do not delete the iPhone library as soon as the transfer counter reaches 100%. A backup is useful only when the copied files open correctly and contain the expected data.
Complete these checks first:
- Confirm that the backup task shows no paused or failed items.
- Open a selection of old and recent photos from the NAS.
- Check the image dimensions and file size when original quality matters.
- Confirm that HEIC files remain HEIC instead of assuming every photo should be JPEG.
- Play several videos from beginning to end.
- Check the video codec, resolution, duration, and file size for important recordings.
- Play a Live Photo and confirm that its motion and audio work.
- If examining the files outside UGREEN Photos, confirm that the Live Photo’s still image and paired MOV video are both present.
- If Optimize iPhone Storage was previously enabled, confirm that the NAS received the full-resolution files after the originals finished downloading.
- Copy several NAS files to another device and open them there.
- Create a second independent copy of the irreplaceable photos.
A computer that cannot preview an HEIC photo or HEVC video may be missing format support. Compare the file size and metadata, and open the file on a compatible device before concluding that the transfer failed.
Before deleting thousands of files, perform a controlled test with one unimportant photo. Allow it to back up, delete it from the iPhone, and confirm that the NAS copy remains available and opens normally. Use a disposable test image so the test itself does not put a valuable memory at risk.
Once that behavior is confirmed, delete photos in manageable batches. Check the NAS after each batch instead of clearing the entire iPhone library in one action.
If you plan to disable iCloud Photos or downgrade the iCloud storage plan, wait until both the NAS copy and the independent backup have passed these checks.
Why Does Automatic iPhone Backup Stop?
iOS controls when applications can continue working in the background. When Photo Backup stops or misses new media, start with these five causes.

The UGREEN NAS app can also reduce or stop background work under its energy-saving behavior when the iPhone battery is low. For the first large upload, connect the phone to power and leave Low Power Mode off.
Once the automated task is running reliably, the remaining question is how the NAS copy will survive a drive failure, accidental deletion, or a problem affecting the entire device.

Protect the Photos After They Reach the NAS
Moving photos from an iPhone to a NAS removes the phone as the only storage location, but the NAS still needs its own protection plan.
A practical household setup has four layers:
- Use the NAS as the primary photo library. Keep the organized, accessible collection on the NAS so authorized family members can reach it from their devices.
- Use RAID 1 in a two-bay NAS when availability matters. RAID 1 mirrors data across two drives so the library remains available after one drive fails. It does not recover a photo deleted by mistake, overwritten by synchronization, encrypted by ransomware, or lost with the entire NAS.
- Keep another copy outside the NAS. Copy important photos to an external drive that is disconnected after the backup, or use a properly configured off-site cloud backup with version retention.
- Test the recovery process. Restore a sample folder periodically and open the recovered photos and videos. A successful backup task does not prove that a future restore will work.

Only remove the iPhone originals or reduce cloud storage after the NAS copy and an independent backup have both passed a restore test.
