Google Drive, Google One, and Google Cloud Storage Are Different
Google Drive is the file storage, synchronization, and collaboration service people use for documents, folders, photos, and shared work. Every Google Account includes 15GB of storage shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.
Google One is the consumer subscription that increases this shared capacity.
Google Cloud Storage is an object-storage platform designed for applications, business data, backup, archive, and disaster recovery. It uses usage-based billing rather than a simple consumer subscription. The final bill may include storage, operations, retrieval, replication, retained versions, and data transfer.

The pricing we're using is UGREEN NAS's regular retail price, not any temporary promotional or sale pricing:

Electricity is calculated at $0.182 per kWh, the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s forecast average residential rate for 2026. EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook is the source for that rate.
We modeled eight hours of drive access and 16 hours of drive hibernation per day:
- DH2300: 13.72W during drive access and 3.3W during drive hibernation
- DXP4800 Plus: 42.36W during drive access and 18.12W during drive hibernation
That produces an estimated annual electricity cost of $10.80 for the DH2300 and $41.77 for the DXP4800 Plus.

The UPS is the most optional item in this configuration. Removing it lowers the five-year NAS total to $712.01 and narrows the gap to $212.06. We keep it in the headline figure because a NAS runs continuously and an unexpected shutdown during a write can damage a storage pool.
If one 4TB drive needs replacement during the five-year period, add $219 at the checked retail price. Replacement is a planning contingency, not a guaranteed expense.

What Moves the Break-Even Point?
Growing from 2TB to 10TB changes the calculation sharply. A NAS can accept higher-capacity drives or additional drives within its model limits. Google One moves to a higher recurring tier.
Ownership Period
A subscription remains inexpensive during a short project. Hardware gains its cost advantage only when it stays in service long enough to spread the initial purchase across several years.
RAID Configuration
RAID 1 uses half the raw capacity. RAID 5 uses one drive’s worth of capacity for parity. A configuration with no redundancy costs less, but it does not provide the same drive-failure tolerance.
Electricity
Local electricity rates vary widely. Background services, heavy access, surveillance, containers, virtual machines, and other workloads that keep the drives awake will increase electricity use.
Backup Requirements
