UGREEN NAS Maintenance Checklist: What to Do and When
UGREEN NAS does not need scheduled restarts or constant manual attention. The essential routine is to watch system alerts, track capacity growth, confirm that backups work, and schedule drive and storage-pool tests when the NAS is not busy.
For a typical home NAS, start with weekly status checks, a rapid SMART test each month, a full SMART test every three months, and periodic restore testing. RAID 5 and RAID 6 users should also schedule UGOS Pro Data Organizing.

If a drive reports a warning, the storage pool becomes degraded, or a backup fails, stop routine maintenance and address that problem first.

A system handling continuous surveillance writes, virtual machines, active team storage, or multiple containers needs more frequent alert, capacity, temperature, and rapid-test reviews. A dusty room with pets or carpet also needs more frequent vent inspections.
Check Alerts and Storage Health Before Starting Maintenance
Begin every maintenance session by checking the current state of the NAS. Do not start with an update, restart, full disk test, or cleaning procedure.
Open the Storage app and review the storage pool, storage space, and individual drives. The pool should show Normal, and every installed drive should appear in its expected bay.
Then check:
- Remaining capacity and recent growth
- Drive health status
- Drive temperatures
- Failed or unfinished storage tasks
- Backup, synchronization, and snapshot results
- System notifications
- Unusual CPU, memory, network, or disk activity
File system, RAID configuration, snapshot activity, application data, and write patterns all affect how the system behaves as capacity is consumed.

Treat rapidly rising usage or a pool approaching its configured capacity as a warning condition. Remove unnecessary data or add capacity before investigating performance problems or starting capacity-intensive work.
Open Task Manager when the NAS feels warmer, louder, or busier than normal. It shows CPU, GPU, memory, network, disk, storage, and temperature activity. A temperature increase matters most when it differs from the NAS’s normal behavior under a similar workload. Use UGOS Pro warnings and the drive manufacturer’s operating specifications rather than applying one temperature limit to every compatible drive.
Keep Drive Warnings Enabled
Open Storage > Hard Drive > Advanced settings and keep Bad Sector Warning enabled.

UGOS Pro can notify you when the number of bad sectors increases significantly. Treat that notification as an instruction to verify the independent backup and inspect the drive, not as a reminder to check again next month.
Routine maintenance should stop if:
- A pool is Degraded or Faulted
- A drive reports Warning, At Risk, or Failed
- Reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors are increasing
- A backup repeatedly fails
- The fan stops or temperatures rise unexpectedly
- Drives disappear and reappear
- The NAS restarts without explanation
Do not run Data Organizing or install a routine system update while one of these conditions remains unresolved.
Review Snapshot Retention and Space Use
UGOS Pro snapshots apply to supported folders stored on a Btrfs storage space. A snapshot initially consumes little additional capacity because it references existing data, but its space consumption grows as files are changed or deleted.
If snapshots are enabled, review them at least monthly:
- Confirm scheduled snapshots are still being created
- Review the number and age of retained snapshots
- Check how much pool capacity they consume
- Confirm the oldest retained recovery point still meets your needs
- Remove obsolete snapshots only after verifying that they are no longer needed
- Periodically mount, clone, or restore a test snapshot
A large deletion, ransomware event, database rewrite, or sustained creative workload can cause snapshot usage to grow quickly. Investigate unexpected growth instead of deleting the oldest snapshots automatically, because those older copies may contain the clean recovery point you need.
Snapshots share the same storage pool as the original data. They provide fast local recovery, but they are not an independent backup if the pool or complete NAS fails.
Schedule Rapid and Full SMART Tests
SMART tests examine the condition of an individual HDD or SSD. UGOS Pro supports manual tests and scheduled test plans.
To run a manual test:
- Open Storage > Hard Drive.
- Find the drive you want to test.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Status test.
- Select the test type and start the test.
- Review the result and previous records under History.

To create a schedule:
- Open Storage > Hard Drive.
- Select Status test plan.
- Select New plan.
- Name the plan and select the target drives.
- Choose a rapid or full test.
- Set the frequency and start time.
- Schedule it during a period of low drive activity.
A rapid test checks key drive functions and SMART information without reading the entire surface. It is appropriate for frequent monitoring. A full test takes much longer and examines the drive more thoroughly.
Use this baseline:
- Typical home NAS: rapid test monthly and full test quarterly
- Write-heavy or business NAS: rapid test weekly and full test monthly
- Newly installed drives: complete the new-drive procedure below before storing the primary copy of important data
Large drives can take many hours to complete a full test. Do not schedule a full SMART test to overlap with:
- A RAID rebuild
- Data Organizing
- A large backup or restore
- Storage-pool expansion
- Several heavy container or VM workloads
- A firmware update
Running every heavy maintenance task on the same night makes warnings harder to interpret and places maximum load on the drives at one time.
Test New Drives Before Putting Them Into Service
Finding a drive problem while the storage pool is empty is less disruptive than discovering it after the NAS contains the primary copy of your data.
For a new pool or a spare drive prepared in advance:
- Confirm that the exact drive model appears on the UGREEN NAS compatibility list.
- Install the drive and confirm that UGOS Pro detects the expected model and capacity.
- Record its serial number, bay, installation date, and warranty expiration.
- Run a rapid status test.
- Run a full status test before creating the production pool or copying primary data.
- Save the initial SMART results as a baseline.
- Create the pool and verify the backup before deleting the source data.
This procedure is intended for new pools and spare drives prepared before an emergency. If a production pool is already degraded, do not leave it exposed for days while running an extended test on an unprepared replacement. Confirm the backup and follow the drive-replacement procedure promptly.
Read SMART Trends, Not Just the Final Result
A green result is useful, but SMART cannot guarantee that a drive will not fail suddenly.
Pay particular attention to:
- Reallocated sectors: The drive has replaced damaged sectors with spare ones.
- Current pending sectors: The drive encountered sectors it could not read reliably.
- Offline uncorrectable sectors: Data could not be recovered during an offline test.
- CRC errors: These can point to a communication, connection, or backplane problem rather than damaged platter media.
- Temperature changes: A new increase can indicate restricted airflow, fan trouble, or heavier background activity.
- Power-on hours: This records operating history and provides context for the drive’s age.
- Previous test results: A change from the drive’s own baseline is often more useful than comparing it with another model.
No single SMART value determines when every drive should be replaced. Watch for failed tests, new or rising reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors, repeated warnings, unusual noise, and changes from the drive’s previous results.
Power-on hours and warranty status provide useful context, but age alone is not a reason to replace a healthy drive. Drive manufacturers also report and interpret raw SMART values differently, so do not apply an arbitrary sector or hour threshold across every model.
If a drive warning persists, confirm the backup and follow the process for replacing a failing NAS drive.
Use Data Organizing on Supported RAID 5 and RAID 6 Pools
If you are looking for data scrubbing in UGOS Pro, the corresponding maintenance feature is called Data Organizing.
Data Organizing is available only when:
- The storage pool uses RAID 5 or RAID 6
- The pool status is Normal or Warning
It is not available for Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, or RAID 10. RAID 1 and RAID 10 still provide redundancy; they simply do not support the UGOS Pro Data Organizing function.
A degraded or faulted pool must be repaired before Data Organizing can run.
To configure it:
- Open the Storage app.
- Go to Storage > Data Organizing.
- Select the eligible RAID 5 or RAID 6 pool.
- Select Start Organizing to run it manually.
- Select Edit to configure its schedule, frequency, start time, and priority.
- Schedule it during a low-activity period.
Data Organizing checks consistency across an eligible RAID 5 or RAID 6 pool and can expose unreadable areas or parity inconsistencies before a rebuild depends on every surviving drive. The process reads extensively from the array and can consume substantial drive and system resources.
A parity inconsistency proves that the stored data and parity do not agree. It does not always identify which readable block contains the correct information, and it does not guarantee detection of every form of silent corruption. Data Organizing therefore complements SMART testing and independent backups rather than replacing them.
For an active RAID 5 or RAID 6 pool, run it about every three months. A lightly changed archive can use a longer interval, such as every six months. After an unclean shutdown, confirm that the pool is healthy and the backup is current before running it sooner.
Do not run Data Organizing during a RAID rebuild, drive replacement, pool expansion, full SMART test, or major backup.
Data Organizing cannot restore a deleted folder, recover an overwritten file, or protect data if the complete NAS is stolen or damaged.
It is also unrelated to desktop file defragmentation. Do not run desktop defragmentation software against a mapped NAS share, and do not defragment SSDs. Let UGOS Pro manage the storage pool.

Verify Backups by Restoring Files
A backup task marked Successful proves that the job finished. It does not prove that the files are complete, readable, or easy to recover.
Review backup logs weekly and perform a test restore at least every three months for important data. A lightly used home archive can use a six-month interval, while business or frequently changing data needs more frequent testing.
A useful restore test should include:
- One recently created document
- One older retained version
- A folder containing several files and subfolders
- One large photo, video, archive, or database file
- File permissions or metadata when they matter to the workflow
Restore the files to a temporary location instead of overwriting the originals. Open them with the application that normally uses them and compare their size, dates, and contents. For especially important archives, compare checksums as well.
Also verify:
- The backup destination has capacity for the next scheduled jobs
- Retention rules have not removed needed recovery points
- Encryption credentials or recovery keys remain available
- Off-site backups are still connected
- Deletions are not propagating into every copy
- The person responsible for recovery knows where the backup is stored
Periodic restore testing determines whether a backup can satisfy its recovery objective. NIST storage security guidance includes restore testing as part of storage recovery planning.

Update UGOS Pro After Verifying Recovery
System updates can deliver security fixes, stability improvements, application changes, and new functions. Application services stop while a system update is installed.
Review available updates monthly and install security-related releases in the next controlled maintenance window. Do not wait for an arbitrary two- or three-month deadline, and do not update in the middle of an unresolved storage problem.
To update UGOS Pro:
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Update & Restore > System Update.
- Review the available version and its release notes.
- Select Update Now.
- Confirm the update and allow the NAS to complete the process.
Before starting:
- Confirm that the storage pool is Normal
- Confirm that the latest backup completed
- Restore one representative file
- Finish or pause large transfers and backup jobs
- Wait for SMART tests, Data Organizing, and RAID operations to finish
- Stop nonessential containers and virtual machines
- Confirm stable power or working UPS protection
- Tell active users when the NAS will be unavailable
Do not interrupt power, remove drives, or force a restart during the update.
After the NAS returns:
- Confirm the new UGOS Pro version.
- Open Storage and verify that every pool and drive appears normally.
- Open an SMB or NFS share from a client computer.
- Confirm that backup, synchronization, and snapshot schedules remain enabled.
- Check containers, virtual machines, media applications, remote access, and any other services you rely on.
- Review notifications for new warnings.
Use the UGREEN Download Center for a manual firmware package only when the normal online update cannot be completed.
Include Security and Power Protection in Maintenance
Security maintenance is a short verification pass. Deeper account, network, or malware problems belong in the dedicated security procedure.
Open App Center > Utility Tools, install Security, and review its status. The UGOS Pro Security app uses ClamAV and supports:
- Real-time protection
- Full scans
- Custom scans
- Scheduled scans
- Automatic virus-definition updates
- Quarantine management
- Scan records
Run scheduled scans outside the NAS’s busiest hours. ClamAV is particularly useful for detecting malware stored or transferred through shared folders, including Windows-targeted files. It does not replace endpoint protection on the computers accessing the NAS.
During the same maintenance review:
- Confirm that administrator accounts use two-factor authentication
- Remove accounts that are no longer needed
- Review account-blocking and password rules
- Disable SSH when it is not required
- Review exposed services and remote-access methods
- Check for unexpected administrator activity

Check the UPS Before the Outage
A UPS must do more than provide battery power. The NAS needs a working communication connection and shutdown rule so it can stop safely before the battery is depleted.
During maintenance:
- Confirm that UGOS Pro still detects the UPS
- Review the remaining battery status
- Confirm the automatic-shutdown setting
- Check the battery-replacement indicator
- Test the shutdown procedure during a planned maintenance window
- Replace an aging or failed battery according to the UPS service requirements

Clean Your UGREEN NAS Safely
Clean the NAS according to its environment, not an inflexible six-month calendar.
Inspect vents monthly when the NAS sits near pets, carpet, smoke, an open window, or construction dust. In a clean room on an open shelf, a quarterly inspection may be enough. Clean when dust is visibly restricting the intake, exhaust, fan, or drive-bay airflow.
Shut Down Before Cleaning
Use the software shutdown command whenever the NAS remains responsive:
- Finish active transfers, backups, SMART tests, and storage tasks.
- Select the profile icon in the upper-right corner of the UGOS Pro desktop.
- Select Shutdown.
- Confirm the command.
- Wait for the system and drives to stop completely.
- Disconnect power and network cables.
Do not pull the power cable while the NAS is running. Do not use the physical power button as the normal shutdown method when software shutdown remains available.
Before removing any drive, label its bay number or photograph the complete drive order. RAID drive order can matter during troubleshooting and recovery.
Remove Dust Without Damaging Components
Use:
- A dry microfiber cloth for exterior surfaces
- A soft antistatic brush for accessible dust
- Controlled compressed air for vents and accessible fans
When using compressed air:
- Keep the can upright
- Use short bursts
- Maintain distance from components
- Prevent fan blades from spinning freely
- Blow dust outward instead of deeper into the chassis
Do not use:
- Liquid cleaner inside the NAS
- A household vacuum near internal electronics
- High-pressure air at close range
- Abrasive cloths
- Unnecessary chassis or power-supply disassembly
Do not remove drives merely to make routine cleaning easier. If a drive must be removed, preserve its bay position and reinstall it only after the chassis is completely clean and dry.
After restarting the NAS:
- Open the Storage app.
- Confirm that every drive is detected in the expected bay.
- Confirm that the storage pool is Normal.
- Listen for new fan or drive noises.
- Watch temperature and disk activity during the first several minutes.
If cleaning does not resolve abnormal temperature or noise, stop treating it as a dust problem. Check the fan, drive health, storage workload, and physical vibration.
