Choosing a home NAS: one that can hold the amount of data you expect, run the applications you’ll actually use, and—most importantly—comes at the most affordable price.

Choose the DH2300 for straightforward phone, computer, and photo backup without Docker. Choose the DH4300 Plus when you need four SATA bays and lightweight ARM-compatible containers but do not need virtual machines, M.2 storage, expandable memory, or Intel Quick Sync. Move to the DXP Series for broader x86 application compatibility, virtual machines, SSD storage, and greater hardware expansion.

The first decision is not two bays versus four bays. It is whether the NAS will mainly store and back up files or also operate as a home server.

DH2300 and DH4300 Plus for Storage-First Homes

DH2300: Simple Two-Bay Storage

The UGREEN NASync DH2300 is the best starting point for a household that wants to:

  • Back up photos and videos from phones
  • Store documents in one shared location
  • Use a NAS as a Time Machine destination
  • Share folders among Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices
  • Play media through DLNA or the HDMI connection

Its two SATA bays and 1GbE port are sufficient for ordinary household backup and file sharing. A 1GbE connection delivers roughly 110 MB/s during practical file transfers when the rest of the network can keep up.

The DH2300 does not support Docker, Plex Server, Jellyfin, Home Assistant, virtual machines, or similar self-hosted applications. This is a limitation of this specific model rather than the DH series. If any of those workloads are part of your plan, choose the DH4300 Plus or a DXP model rather than treating the DH2300 as a server you can expand later.

With two matched drives in RAID 1, the second drive mirrors the first. That keeps the storage pool available if one drive fails, but it does not protect files from deletion, ransomware, theft, fire, or failure of the complete NAS.

DH4300 Plus: Four Bays and Lightweight Containers

The UGREEN NASync DH4300 Plus fits homes that need more usable capacity than a two-bay RAID 1 configuration provides.

Its four SATA bays support RAID 5, RAID 6, and RAID 10, while its 2.5GbE port provides more local transfer headroom than the DH2300. It is a practical fit for a growing photo library, multiple computers, family file sharing, and direct media playback.

The DH4300 Plus also supports Docker, but that does not make it equivalent to a DXP model. Its ARM processor requires an image built for the correct architecture. Before choosing it for a specific container, confirm that the exact image and tag include a linux/arm64 build. Some projects publish only linux/amd64 images.

UGOS Pro, file services, photo indexing, and every container share the fixed 8GB of memory. That memory cannot be upgraded, making the DH4300 Plus better suited to a small number of lightweight containers than a growing homelab.

The model also has no M.2 slots. It cannot use an internal NVMe SSD cache or separate NVMe application pool, so container databases, metadata, and other frequently accessed application files remain on the HDD array.

Plex or Jellyfin can run on the DH4300 Plus, but plan around direct playback. The ARM processor does not provide Intel Quick Sync, so real-time codec conversion, subtitle burn-in, remote bandwidth, and simultaneous streams can affect performance.

Choose the DXP4800 Plus instead when you need four bays together with expandable memory, 10GbE, virtual machines, M.2 storage, broader x86 container compatibility, or hardware-assisted transcoding.

When those limitations conflict with the applications you want to run, the DXP Series provides the more appropriate foundation.

DXP Series for Virtual Machines, M.2 Storage, and Faster Networking

DXP2800: Two Bays with Intel and Docker

The UGREEN NASync DXP2800 is the most balanced two-bay choice for a home that wants both storage and self-hosted applications.

It combines:

  • Intel N100 processor
  • 8GB DDR5 memory expandable to 16GB
  • One 2.5GbE network port
  • Two SATA bays
  • Two M.2 NVMe slots
  • Docker and virtual-machine support

This makes it a strong starting point for Plex, Jellyfin, Home Assistant, Nextcloud, a private Minecraft server, and other moderate container workloads.

The main limitation is capacity growth. In RAID 1, usable SATA capacity is limited to the size of one drive. The M.2 slots can provide a separate SSD storage pool or supported cache function, but they do not extend the existing SATA RAID 1 pool.

Choose the DXP4800 Plus if your projected library will exceed what one suitably sized SATA drive can hold.

DXP4800 Plus: Four Bays for a Full Home Server

The tradeoff is the complete system cost. Four drives cost more than two, create more mechanical noise, draw more power, and make rebuilds longer when high-capacity drives are used.

1GbE, 2.5GbE, or 10GbE on a Home Network

A faster network port only helps when the complete path can use it.

The NAS port, router or switch, cabling, client network adapter, storage pool, RAID configuration, and workload all affect actual speed.

A phone connected through ordinary Wi-Fi will not suddenly transfer at 10GbE because the NAS has a 10GbE port. For most family backup workloads, 1GbE or 2.5GbE is sufficient.

Ten-gigabit Ethernet becomes useful when:

  • A workstation has a compatible 10GbE adapter
  • The NAS uses an SSD storage pool
  • Several clients transfer data simultaneously
  • Large video or creative files move across the local network
  • Virtual machines or applications generate substantial network traffic

A four-drive HDD array in RAID 5 generally will not saturate 10GbE by itself. SSD storage, more drives, or several concurrent clients are usually needed to approach the connection’s full potential.

The Complete Cost of a Diskless Home NAS

Installed drives, RAID activity, cooling, indexing, and network traffic affect actual consumption. Docker containers, virtual machines, surveillance recording, and media services can also prevent drive hibernation, raising annual use above these examples.

Do not order drives from a family name alone. Confirm that the exact HDD or SSD SKU is compatible with the NAS model and intended RAID configuration. Verify the selected drives, memory, and UPS in the UGREEN NAS compatibility list.

Final Checks Before You Order

Confirm these points before selecting a model:

  1. Decide whether the NAS will remain primarily a storage destination or also run containers and virtual machines.
  2. For an ARM model, confirm that every required container image supports linux/arm64.
  3. Verify that the usable capacity of the planned RAID configuration meets the projection.
  4. Check whether every drive, SSD, memory module, and UPS is compatible with the exact NAS model.
  5. Confirm that your computers, switch, cabling, and Wi-Fi can use the network speed you are buying.
